A Victorian Feel - Vintage Jewelry

Vintage jewelry may not be "Victorian" but many pieces definitely look "Victorian."

Vintage jewelry is the hottest trend right now and will make beautiful gifts for women this holiday season.

In the 1920's when Costume jewelry first became popular, rhinestone bracelets, brooches, earrings and clips were used to adorn necklines, hats, furs, belts, and more.

1925 Art Deco brought in amethyst, emerald, sapphire, topaz, and ruby to accentuate the rhinestones.

More tailored clothing styles of the 40's brought oversized brooches and earrings to soften the boxy styles. At the end of the 40's more feminine styles came back and costume jewelry had more of a Victorian feel. Collecting Vintage Jewelry

We are all fascinated with the past. Collecting things from the past creates nostalgia and a heart warming feeling. It doesn't always matter if the item you purchase is "valuable" or a signed piece with historic significance. What matters most is whether you like what you bought, if you will wear it, or if it will make a nice gift for someone

Where to buy? Search garage sales, flea markets, Ebay, your grandmother's jewelry box, or buy a pretty reproduction from department or discount stores.

The best buys will be at flea markets and garage sales. Don't worry about a little dirt or tarnish. Most pieces will clean up nicely with a little jewelry cleaner or polish. Don't buy jewelry that is obviously glued together. Choose jewels that are set-in or soldered in place. Interesting pieces to look for: brooches, rings, cameos, lockets, earring, bracelets. Pin a brooch to your wool coat, hat, scarf, belt, or purse. What a fashion statement you'll make! Have fun searching for the perfect piece!
